Jay Baruchel vs. Christopher Mintz-Plasse
Wed, 10 Mar 2010 13:39:00 PST

In the last five years or so, we've entered into a full-blown renaissance of one of the most hallowed and time-honored genres in filmmaking: the Geek Gets the Girl. Over the past few years Judd Apatow and Michael Cera have reminded America once again that we really love those adorable little geeks. Some guys are fumbly but sweet, thoughtful, and caring -- and they make us suddenly aware that no one really wants to be in a relationship with the hot but emotionally distant Edward Cullens of this…

What's the Big Deal?: Rebel Without a Cause (1955)
Tue, 09 Mar 2010 16:42:00 PST

As a title, Rebel Without a Cause tells you almost everything you need to know. With absolutely no context, it conjures the image of a young person -- it's always a young person, isn't it? -- rebelling against authority. And with the context that comes from having a passing knowledge of American culture, even people who haven't seen the film can picture James Dean in the lead, grappling with the stiff, square 1950s. There's no question that Rebel Without a Cause has been influential, and that…

Green Zone vs. Bourne Identity: How to Tell the Difference
Tue, 09 Mar 2010 08:01:00 PST

This week in theaters, Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass reunite for yet another shoot 'em up action conspiracy thriller in which the government messes with the wrong rogue agent who then goes AWOL on his own moral crusade, racking up the body count in an exotic locale along the way. Only this Jason Bourne is slightly less forgetful and ... why, it's…

The Best Oscar Moments
Tue, 09 Mar 2010 07:44:00 PST

This year's Oscars started off strong with a song-and-dance number from an extra sparkly Neil Patrick Harris and some terrific zingers from hosts Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. Many hours later, it ended brilliantly with some moving speeches from the night's biggest winners. And while it did seem like the middle portion of the show dragged on longer than that train attached to Jennifer Lopez's dress, there were still enough classic moments to make this a memorable Oscars. Here are the top three:

The Ten Things We Learned from the Academy Awards
Mon, 08 Mar 2010 15:38:00 PST

1. Hosting doesn't require two people.
Steve Martin was decent, and Alec Baldwin wasn't actively offensive -- but there is no way you can claim they both had to be there. Perhaps we've been spoiled by the hosts of recent memory, but going back to one strong comedian will be the Academy's mission next year. Zack Galifianakis, anyone?

2. The Lifetime Achievement Award Is Still Going Strong.
Look, I love Jeff Bridges. I've never written a mean word about him, and I'm happy he's got a little golden…

**Red Carpet Live Blog**

3:22pm: I going with ABC throughout this diary. Why? I don't have E! in high definition, and I don't think I can take Ryan Seacrest and Ben Lyons in low definition. I'm simply not a strong enough man.

3:25pm: Marc Brown and Russ Leatherman are here to make my time watching the red carpet special. I don't know who they are, but I already like them around 400x more than anything E! has had going the past decade or so.

3:30pm: George Pennacchio is the guy actually on The Red…

Drinking Games for Oscar Night
Fri, 05 Mar 2010 10:59:00 PST

The main difference between the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes -- apart from the Oscars being fairly legitimate while the Globes are a hilarious farce perpetrated by Hollywood suck-ups -- is that during the Globes telecast, the audience gets drunk. People at the Academy Awards are much more dignified. But that doesn't mean you, the home viewer, must suffer in sobriety! To keep your drinking regulated and well organized, we offer the following...

Best Picture Winners That Haven't Stood the Test of Time
Fri, 05 Mar 2010 10:51:00 PST

Casablanca. Gone with the Wind. It Happened One Night. On the Waterfront. Ben-Hur. Lawrence of Arabia. The Sound of Music. These are the great films of cinema history, Oscar Best Picture winners all, and just hearing their names makes you sigh and wish you could sit down right now and watch them all again.

But how about The Broadway Melody? Cavalcade? The Great Zeigfeld? The Best Years of Our Lives? They don't exactly inspire the same sort of response. The fact is that there are plenty of…
